The Aunts Go Marching...

Want to know something?

I LOVE being an aunt.

Seriously love-love-love it.

So you can imagine how excited I am that four of my favorite little people are coming to see me this weekend. Well...technically they are coming to see Lagoon....but I'm an added bonus.

Because I spoil them.

Saved By Grace

Do you want to know why the bagpipes....sound like the bagpipes?

Grace notes.

At least that's what Dennis told me. Then he tried to show me what that meant. was really difficult.

Grace notes are going to be the death of me.

If not me, then Mr. Thompson because he's the one who has to listen to me try and play them. I think his ears are bleeding....

Pray for him.

To Be...Or Not To Be.

That is the question.

If this were a fertility... or rather an, I could really make you laugh. Or cry.

But I won't. Because this isn't that kind of blog.

But if it were....I would talk about today's "sad day" after our IUI didn't work this month.

I would also tell you that I just want to give up and take vacation with my husband. A loooooong looooooong vacation.

Good thing this isn't that kind of blog.

Today I did something kind of cool with work. Some of you know that I'm part of a two year leadership program with the Red Cross which provides me some pretty amazing opportunities. As part of a little project I am working on I went to LDS Hospital with a videographer from work to film a recipient video and watch a stem cell harvest/transfusion between brothers.

One very generous 21 year old is fighting to keep his brother alive. To do so, he is donating his stem cells. His 20 year old younger brother has had ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) since he was 9 years old and this stem cell transfusion is one of the last threads of hope keeping him alive.

What is acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)?

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of the white blood cells, the cells in the body that normally fight infections. There are two main types of white blood cells-lymphoid cells and myeloid cells. ALL affects lymphoid cells.

Unfortunately, this young man has been in remission 3 times... which puts the odds not in his favor. A stem cell transfusion is one of his last shots at beating the disease.

Have you ever spoken intimately with and filmed somebody's cancer story? It is a pretty incredible opportunity.

Have you ever spoken to a brother who is trying so hard to keep his brother alive? Equally awe inspiring.

After I was done with my interview and filming I sat down to speak with their mother who, with tears in her eyes, asked if she could have a copy when our project is complete. They have been dealing with this disease for so long...and have family and friends who just haven't understood the process. In a small way, maybe this will help.

I went with the motivation of capturing this story to inspire the people that I work with to continue doing...what we're doing. I left understanding that this was bigger than a Red Cross project. It's a story about one brother's love, one brother's hope, and the opportunity to preserve their story.

Man, I love my job!

21 Gun Salute

To all you mothers out there...I SALUTE YOU!

As in a 21 gun salute.

If I could...I would give you the military Medal of Honor. I believe that you deserve it for going into war each and every day of your lives.

A war against your children.

Last night I had an ever so slight glimpse of that war. Lil' A who is staying with us for the month...knocked on our door after midnight. Her eyes hurt. This is the third night in a row in which she hasn't wanted to go to sleep. Consequently, her eyes hurt.

As Mr. Thompson spoke to her through the door telling her to shut her eyes and then they wouldn't hurt anymore...I rolled over and grumbled something like...

"I'll never complain about our life again".

(double income no kids) really isn't so bad. I kind of like it actually...

Make peace - not war.

Practice Makes Perfect

I worked my butt off this last week on my chanter. All for the hope that Dennis would be proud. He said practice 1/2 hour each I practiced an hour...while on vacation....over a holiday weekend (much to the non-delight of my family). I was sure that he would be impressed with my 500% improvement over last week.

He wasn't.

I believe his exact words were...."Not quite there yet. Keep your fingers straight and keep blowing".

Grrrrrr. What is that about old Scottish men being ornery and hard to please?!

And yes - in the end he made me sing again.

P.S. I'm not one to who normally believes in signs....but after I clicked "publish" on the above post....I got the following pop-up on my computer. I believe that heaven is sending me a message (or Dennis is watching).

And so the bagpipe lessons continue!

What Women Really Want...

Today one of my employee's brought me something that made me smile.

Mr. Thompson - you are hereby on notice. I don't care if bagpipe lessons are expensive. I want my pink scooter! Now. I won it fair and square...

So it's time to pay the Piper. (pun intended)
